There are plenty of reasons to add exercise to your regular routine. Regular physical activity can deliver plenty of rewards. You’ll feel better and look better, improve your heart health, and your brain gets a boost too.

On the flip side, bad things begin to happen if you are physically inactive. The following 10 side-effects of no exercise should be avoided at all costs, and can be, with simple and regular physical activity.

1. Your Heart Weakens

Your risk for heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis, hypertension and other dangerous heart conditions dramatically increases if you don’t exercise regularly.

2. You Experience More Stress

Today’s world is hectic and stressful. There is no need to add more stress to your daily routine. However, that’s exactly what happens when you avoid exercise. Physical activity has been proven to lead to lower stress levels and less anxiety.

3. Your Sex Life Suffers

Heightened stress causes a decline in libido in men and women. Exercise delivers strength and stamina, important for a good sex life. Regular exercise has also been linked to a reduction in ED (erectile dysfunction) in men.

4. Your Chances of Contracting Bone Disease Skyrocket

Little physical activity leads to the development of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and other bone density diseases.

5. You Are Not As Happy

Exercise releases “feel good” hormones called endorphins. They help prevent depression, make you feel good after exercise, and deliver a calm, clear, happy state of mind.

6. You Get Fat

Your chances of becoming overweight or obese are elevated when you don’t exercise. As you gain weight, your risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems increases.

7. Your Natural Defense System Weakens

The Mayo Clinic reports that “without regular aerobic exercise, your immune system weakens.” This means your natural ability to resist infection, illness and injuries of all types is decreased.

8. Your Self-Esteem Can Take a Hit

Increased chances of obesity, depression, stress and a poor sex life can negatively impact the way you think about yourself.

9. Your Lung Capacity Decreases

As your physical activity diminishes, so does your ability to breathe properly. If your lungs aren’t working right, your heart, muscles and entire body do not get the valuable oxygen they need to function properly.

10. You Take Years Off of Your Life

Regular exercise has been linked to an increase in longevity. The opposite is also true. A sedentary life, free of regular physical activity, is directly related to a shorter lifespan.
